About Akita Prefecture

Akita Prefecture
The Location of Akita Prefecture

Akita Prefecture is located in the Tohoku region of Honshu, Japan, and is known for its stunning natural beauty, including majestic mountains, the Sea of Japan, and picturesque rural landscapes. It is also rich in festivals and traditional culture, such as the famous Namahage tradition.
The prefecture boasts a vibrant food culture, offering fresh agricultural, forestry, and marine products nurtured by its abundant nature. These ingredients are used to create a variety of local dishes. Among them, Akita rice, particularly the "Akitakomachi" variety, is highly popular worldwide. Continuous efforts in breeding have resulted in even tastier rice varieties.
Although Akita experiences harsh winters covered in snow, it is a region where unique cultures and traditions have thrived despite the cold.

Like other prefectures, Akita is experiencing a declining birthrate and an aging population, leading to labor shortages. Currently, the number of foreign workers in the prefecture is relatively low, with most coming from Vietnam, the Philippines, and China. Approximately 30% are employed in manufacturing, while others work in wholesale and retail, service industries, and education or learning support services.
In terms of residency status, nearly half are technical interns, and many others hold visas based on familial ties or status. This reflects the growing reliance on foreign workers to address labor needs in various sectors.
