What is Japan like?
About Miyagi Prefecture
The Location of Miyagi Prefecture
Miyagi Prefecture is located in the center of the Tohoku region, facing the Pacific Ocean to the east. The prefecture is blessed with rich fishing grounds and scenic tourist spots, including Matsushima, which is regarded as one of Japan’s Three Most Scenic Views (Nihon Sankei). The sight of green islands floating in the blue sea attracts many visitors.
To the west, Miyagi is bordered by mountains, and in the central part of the prefecture, there is one of Japan's prominent grain-producing regions. The rice grown here is highly popular across the country.
The prefecture was severely impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, with a massive tsunami causing significant damage along the coast. However, the area has since made a remarkable recovery, and many memorial facilities have been built to preserve the memory of the disaster.

Like other prefectures, Miyagi is experiencing challenges related to a declining birthrate and an aging population, leading to labor shortages. Currently, the number of foreign workers in the prefecture is relatively low, with most coming from Vietnam, China, and Nepal. About 30% of these workers are employed in manufacturing, while others work in wholesale and retail, service industries, education and learning support, and hospitality and food services.
In terms of residency status, a significant number of foreign workers are engaged in activities outside their designated visa status (including student visas), and many are technical interns. These workers are playing a growing role in supporting Miyagi's labor force across various sectors.
